Senait Gidey by JD Barnes

One of my personal reservations concerning highlighting and contouring dark skin is that tutorials often call for us to wear makeup that is often 3-4 shades lighter and then manually add back deeper tones to create the effect. I love my complexion and love when the color of my face matches the rest of my body!!

That being said, I especially love these shots of Senait Gidey by JD Barnes. Her skin tone is even and the glow is magnificent. Thank you Beau Derrick for properly accentuating her beauty!

Skincare, K Beauty, and Me

Over this past summer, I noticed a cluster of bumps on my forehead. While I found them strangely peculiar, I assumed they would disappear within a couple of days and didn't pay them much mind. After about ten days, I started freaking out.

They were still there AND they seemed to be enlarging their territory.

I, for the most part, never really had problematic skin. I was born with dark circles around my eyes and occassional deal with one hormonal pimple, which can mostly be attributed to my diet pre-menstration influencing my hormones (meaning, health eats = no Pimple Pete). Oh, and I have oily skin but that's more annoying than problematic as it soley translates to excessive shine. But - besides those three things - there hasn't been much shakeup to my skin. And, this is even considering the fact that I barely take care of outside of washing and using [any] moisturizer that I can find.

Hence, why the forehead bumps where highly problematic.

A couple of Google searches lead me to the understanding that I, in my old age, had just had my first experience with blackheads. And, in true midlife crisis form, I realized that I needed to develop a skincare regimen. After doing some research, speaking to a few estheticians, lurking on online conversations with estheticians, joining a few Facebook groups catering to skin care for minorities, and ultimately becoming fascinated with Korean beauty trends, I decided that the 10-Step Korean Beauty Routine was the one for me. While it is a bit extensive, I loved that almost every product I looked up used fully all natural ingrediants with zero additives, parabens, sulfates, or other fillers.

You should know, I found a way to amend it to become a 6-step version because I'm lazy, noncommittal, and these products are expensive. And, also, I use a couple of non-Korean  products because I had already purchased them due to their rave reviews and I didn't want to waste money.

I apply in the following order -

  1. SU:M37 Miracle Rose Cleansing Stick: This all natural cleanser is made from a fermented damask rose extract that is gentle on all skin types that smells absolutely heavenly. My skin always feels soft and supple after use. And, what I love most, is that the cleanser is in an easy-to-use twist-up tube, meaning there is no mess or spills. Charlotte from The Klog did an extensive review of this product that I highly suggest you read. I think you'll soon realize you need it too!
  2. SkinFood Peach Sake Toner: This was the first K-beauty product I purchased. I never used toner because I never had a clue what it was for. Thanks to Al Gore's internet, I learned toners remove pollutants along with any residue that you're cleanser may have left behind while restoring pH balance. As this is the first toner I have ever used, I may not be the best rater of the product. All I know is I love that it takes of those last pieces of dirt away and it smells really delicious.
  3. Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid: This product is one that I have heard estheticians rave over for months. It's a leave-on chemical exfoliant that removes dead skin while hydrating and smoothing skin. If I could point out to one product in this regimen that helped clear up the blackheads, this one would definitely be it. After one week of use, my skin was visibly clearer and more radiant.
  4. Benton Snail Bee High Content Essence: I'm honestly not sure what essences do but I believe they are a type of moisturizer. My skin definitely looks and feels more hydrated after I put it on. I'm not sure if it is lifechanging and perhaps any essence will provide similar results but.. I enjoy this one.
  5. J. One Jelly Pack: I became sold on this when I was told that this one product multitasks as a serum, moisturizer, face mask, and makeup primer. It, literally, cut down the 10-step routine to 6-steps (which is also a bonus if you travel often and don't want to pack a lot of stuff). It  tightens my skin, hydrates my skin, and definitely primes for makeup. I think everyone should add this hardworker to their regimen.

In addition, I try to do sheet masks (i.e. Tony Moly, Benton Snail Bee Sheet Mask, etc) at least 2-3 times a week. On the nights that I do sheet masks, I take out the Paula's Choice BHA step and do the sheet mask there instead. If I wasn't so lazy, I'd honestly do one nightly because I love the after effects so much. As Charlotte from The Klog points out:

The secret to sheet masks? They force your skin to absorb the nutrients and moisture better than if you just applied a cream or serum—before the product has a chance to evaporate. The immediate effects are addicting, after one use your face is slightly more plump and much brighter due to all the moisture your skin just absorbed

I am officially three weeks into the full 5-product regimen and I absolutely love it. Four out of five of these products were new and I wanted to be mindful of potential allergic or other unbecoming reactions, so I decided to slowly onboard them. I used one product for two weeks before adding another product. I do the steps twice a day - in the morning and evening.  My blackheads have definitely cleared up a lot and my skin is softer and glowing - to the point that I don't even want to put on makeup! An added bonus to finally taking care of my skin is that my makeup application is deflinitely smoother and more exquisite looking. I'm thinking of tweaking this regimen a little bit and adding SkinFood Brown Rice Oil Cleansing Tissue in the evenings to remove makeup before I wash my face and using Makeup Artist's Choice Mandelic Acid Serum as an exfoliant in the evenings (because I already purchased it, have yet to use it, and am not about to waste it).

I've always read that you need about 4 weeks of consistent use to see effects but I've definitely already begun to see the difference so I can't wait to see what my skin looks like by the end of the year!

When it comes to skincare, I am a firm believer that consistency is key. I know there are tons of items on the market and it's easy to get tempted to try new things but I really want to stick these products out first before I try something new. I'm attempting to be disciplined not only in skincare routine but also in financial accountability. I've promised myself that I will only buy a new product if one I have is 100% not working well with my skin and/or I have finished an entire bottle and want to try something different. As all of these products seem to work well, I'm truly not too interested in trying anything new besides toner and essence.

Next on the list is to really create a regimen for winter lip care. While I do exfoliate regularly and drink ton of water, I still can't seem to get rid of dry, peeling lips during the colder months. I'm not sure what I need to do but I know brands such as Carmex, Vaseline, Chaptick, and Burt's Bees have not done much for me. I've been trying to do a bit of research on more popular brands that I have heard discussed such as Korres, Jack Black, EOS (speaking of which, have you seen the video when it melts like butter? It's phenomenal!), and Rosebud Perfume Co and I want to settle on which one I will commit to soon enough. Also, I'm considering doing lip masks. Yes, I'm slowly morphing into that person.

I Think I Might Love ColourPop...

THE SWATCHES!
How lovely is it to see lip color swatches on varying skin tones in order to help you see if the color will work for your complexion?! I appreciate their efforts in transparency and informed decision making.

Glo' Up

Sha The Stylist saved my life.
While I was sad to let the blue go, I knew I didn't want to go back to my usually black hair just quite yet. And, so, that is why he have this contraption here. Red hair with blonde, orange, and blue-green highlights. It's like a warm rainbow explosion and I adore it :)

the blue experiment [2]

I figured I'd share some of the behind-the-scenes of how I achieved my blue look, for those who are interested in taking the plunge and experimenting with colored hair. This was my first time delving into coloring hair and I found the process extremely simple and easily repeatably - mainly because I bought hair that was already bleached.

the blue hair experiment [1]

I've been lusting for blue hair for quite some time now. I ran across this picture of a beautiful brown girl with dark blue hair and immediately knew this was the next move for me. This was a HUGE thing for me because I have been the queen of jet black hair for years. In addition, working in Corporate America doesn't lend itself over too well to colored hair unless you stick to the customary blondes, browns, and reds. I ran across another divine brown girl in blue hair and found a Malibu Dollface vlog which mesmerized me so ...after much thought, I settled on "why not?". I don't have kids or a spouse. My parents are the only ones whose opinions I truly consider about but I'm positive they won't mind - I've done crazier things. lol. I think blue would look positively radiant on my complexion. So...

26 Months Natural

While I'm not the bathroom selfie type, I really wanted to snap a quick picture of the progress of my hair growth. It has been a little over 26 months since I started growing my hair out from my caesar (January 5, 2013!). For the most part, I've kept my hair braided or beneath wigs and weaves, but always being sure to keep my scalp and tresses moisturized.

Firmoo, A Review

I've worn glasses every since the 6th grade, when Mrs. Farmer told my parents I spent the entire day squinting and she had to move me to the front of the classroom in order for me able to read what was written on the chalk board. Obviously, I became highly upset with this revelation. Did Mrs. Farmer really want me to be relegated to the dweeb squad by thrusting me into the world for the four-eyed? Wasn't it bad enough that my boobs didn't come in yet?

the benefits of witch hazel

Witch hazel has many, many uses and what I like most about it is that it’s eco-friendly and cheap! I’ve actually never used a toner but noticed a few years back that my sister used Thayer’s witch hazel. She sorta kinda really has the most flawless, blemish-free, and even toned skin - which is what prompted me to give it a try in my regimen this go round.

Among all its many uses, one of the main things witch hazel is known for being a natural astringent. It can help with acne control by reducing inflammation and decreasing oil. It is also known to tighten skin - which can help de-puff or reduce under eye baggage. And it helps tighten pores for a smoother appearance of skin.

You can use witch hazel to freshen up your skin - dab some on a cotton ball or pad and get rid of all the impurities in seconds! Also, while witch hazel does get rid of excess oil, it helps to eliminate water loss and improves hydration to the outer layer of skin. So, it’s an ideal moisturizer to use right after you get out of the shower to seal in moisture and fight dry skin!

I’m sure there are many other brands of witch hazel on the market but I decided to go with Thayer’s because its the one brand that everyone I know who uses witch hazel uses. And almost all of them use the Rose Petal one (but you can also purchase in Original, Original-Unscented, Lavender, and Cucumber).

a little beauty. a little fashion.

i love incorporating menswear pieces into my wardrobe.
most of my button down shirts are men's (or little boy's).
paired it with a leather midi circle skirt and some snakeskin sandals.

Aveeno's Clear Complexion line has always been great to me in regards to keeping me blemish free (and getting rid of dark spots) but i wanted something more organic/natural that could also work on brightening and toning my uneven skin. then i randomly saw a tumblr post from Cassandra discussing her beauty regimen consisting of Shea Moisture products and sweet almond oil. did a little bit of research and decided that Shea Moisture's Coconut & Hibiscus facial wash seem like the best thing for me. decided to get sweet almond oil because, apparently, it's one of the oils that can be used as a great makeup remover & moisturizer (chamomile oil, olive oil, and avocado oil are also on the list). and classic thayer's premium alcohol-free witch hazel as my toner.

today was my first day using this regimen and... my skin has this glow that no amount of powder could dull down.

dope.

Matte Nails

I've been obsessed with matte nails for about a year now. I always see them when scrolling through my Tumblr dashboard and knew I needed them in my life - although I have not worn acrylic nails in almost a decade. I went to my nail shop two weeks ago excited for matte gray nails only to find out that my shop didn't carry any matte top coat. So, when I get to get my fills yesterday, I made it a point to bring my own matte polish. I hit up a local CVS and found Sally Hansen Big Matte Top Coat (retail: $5.99-$6.29) and Wet 'n' Wild Shine Matte Top Coat (retail: $0.99). Although I love Sally Hanson products and my gut often equates more expensive to better, I decided to compare to the to see if there really was a difference between price and value.
Wet 'n' Wild Shine Matte Top Coat (on thumb) and Sally Hansen Big Matte Top Coat (on pointer)
I think the Wet 'n' Wild Top Coat is pretty amazing. It mattified my nail perfectly. The Sally Hansen top coat didn't really mattify my nail color and it actually stripped the polish off my acrylic. That isn't a glare on the picture of my pointer; that is just good old white acrylic! I didn't even know top coat could do that. Needless to stay, I paid my $1.05 and walked out of CVS with the Wet 'n' Wild matte.

In order to celebrate today being the first day of Spring, I used OPI 'Ate Berries in the Canaries' for my nail color. When mattified, it reminds me of MAC Flat Out Fabulous (which I totally want to buy now). I absolutely adore the leather-y look of matte nails. I'm trying not to commit to wearing this shade all spring and summer but... don't be surprised if it becomes a thing, ok?

Happy first day of Spring!

Perfecting the 'Fresh Face'

Make-up and I have an interesting dynamic. I love to see a well-made face. I love to see the artistic flair and fun many women use when wearing makeup. But... my routine? I need something that can be done in 10 minutes and gives me a clean look. I just picked up a make up routine about 3 years ago and, outside of changing my foundation to Revlon Colorstay because MAC Studio Fix wasn't working well with my oily skin, my 10 minute routine hasn't really evolved much. I just like to cover a few blemishes and highlight my eyes... without lining them or wearing eye shadow. Does that make sense?

I naturally have dark circles around my eyes so I am really sensitive to adding anything "dark" to my eye area. And, while eye shadow looks fun, it not something I generally like on myself most times (if I do wear it, I stick to bronze-esque shades like MAC Constructivist because they just impart more of a glow than actual color). As much as possible, I never want to look too over done and am a very big fan of the fresh face look.

But.. I am always looking for ways to maximize my "fresh face" and, as luck would have it, one of my favorite vloggers posted a tutorial just this morning about the look. I have relatively thin brows and wanted to learn how to fill them in without utilizing the increasingly popular "concealer" trick. She shows an awesome technique, along with a few others, that really work well to highlight your eyes and face with an au naturale look.

Enjoy!

EVCO is Great For Your Skin

Made from the meat of the coconut, coconut oil is solid, white, and waxy below 76 degrees fahrenheit. Above this temperature it melts in to a clear oily liquid.

source
While extra virgin coconut oil (EVCO) is known to have amazing hair benefits (click here for some knowledge), one lesser known fact is its awesome skin care benefits. Because of its highly antiviral, highly antibacterial properties, coconut oil cleanses your skin and treats your acne and skin infections naturally and safely. People who have used coconut oil to treat acne have reported that their acne have nearly all stopped or hardly form and that the duration of their pimples lasts only about a day or two. They also report far fewer outbreaks happening at all. A recent pimple outbreak reminded me of the skin benefits of the oil when I put some on a pimple before bed and woke up to severely reduced in mass a pimple on my cheek. While my pimples tend to last for about a week (if untouched; I sometimes many times pop them by day 3 because I really cannot...), this one cleared up in 3 days. And my blemishes are lightening up.

source

How do you use coconut oil to treat your acne and/or blemishes?
  • Purchase organic extra virgin coconut oil.
  • Start massaging it in to your skin daily
    • best to wash your face very well or apply it after a shower.
  • Add coconut oil to smoothies.
    • i.e. blend 8 ounces yogurt, 4 ounces fruit, 1/4 cup milk, and 2 tb coconut oil.
  • A tablespoon or two a day of extra virgin coconut oil to take as a supplement to your diet.

I usually purchase mine from The Vitamin Shoppe or Wal-Mart (in the aisle with vitamins), but I've recently found that Amazon offers great prices as well. An organic and inexpensive product, extra virgin coconut oil is an essential tool in every person's beauty arsenal for healthy skin.
