Giovanna Battaglia Engelbert

Giovanna Battaglia Engelbert is an Italian fashion editor, stylist, creative director and consultant. She is currently the senior fashion editor at Vogue Japan and a contributing editor at W Magazine.

She began working in the fashion industry at age 17, when she modeled in her hometown of Milan. After about a year into the work, she realized she hated it and was more attracted to the storytelling and messaging that can be cultivated with clothes. She quite fashion and starting working as a stylist, supporting herself through the earnings she had saved while modeling, for three years before getting picked up as a fashion editor for L’Uomo Vogue (under Anna Dello Russo) which forever changed her story.

I read an excerpt of her book over on W Magazine, and knew I had to immediately purchase. While I am not the most familiar with her editorial work, I've always been a fan girl of her street style looks during fashion week and I've always found it fascinating to learn the stories of how people made it to where they are.

I'm packing Gio_Graphy: Fun in the Wild World of Fashion on my flight to Tanzania and can't wait to devour it. Hopefully, it'll be the inspiration I need to keep pursuing this second career.

Silver Booties: An Inspo Board

Every since I bought silver booties from Zara a few weeks ago, I've been trying to figure out how to properly style them.

The Zara model wore it classic yet very posh way - a cozy oversized sweater and skinny denim. Notice how the studding on the denim helps to tone what could have been a very glaring contrast of black and silver.

While reviewing some street style looks from Milan Fashion Week a few days ago, I noticed a lot of women styling and profiling in silver booties and decided to take their cue for inspiration for my future looks.

From pleats and furs to tiered velvet dresses, the silver bootie ended up being more versatile for lewks than I initially expected. My original styling ideas were all based around black but.. I'll definitely be playing with color after seeing these.

Prada Feather-Embellished Satin Sandal

The Prada heels, as photographed by Maxime Poiblanc for the Oct 2017 issue of Allure Magazine

Tamu McPherson was the first person I saw in these shoes. Paired with a sequin dress, a soft red lip, no jewelry, and a beautiful smile, that post on Instagram rocked my entire world. In a world where sequins always command the spotlight, something else managed to steal the shoe.

The feathers!
The oversized button!
The block heel!
THOSE SHOES!

Tamu McPherson

It was the perfect balance of extravagance and comfort. Lord knows I hate a turtleneck but this pairing has made the loose-fitting dress + block heels combo look extraordinarily chic. Since this post, I've been excitingly awaiting to see how these shoes will be reinterpreted by my fav. Thus far, I've seen Keyshia Ka'Oir pair the red version with denim and a sheer blouse for her bachelorette festivities in Vegas this past weekend. Anna Dello Russo also styled the red version, opting to pair them with a yellow sequin mini dress for a bold color blocked look. I can't wait to see what the girls pull together for this phenomenal piece!

The shoe seems to sold out in most sizes and colors at many retailers, Bergdoof Goodman, Neiman Marcus, and Barney's have a few still left in stock. May the odds be forever in your favor.

A Plaid Aesthetic for FW 2017

Irene Kim in Massimo Dutti
This is totally a thing that is happening right now and I am utterly committed to making it happen for my life. Whether worn with a frumpy dress for a cozy aesthetic or paired with a mini and ruffle blouse for something more tailored, there really is no wrong way to make this trend do wonders with your wardrobe. It's one of the more easily adaptable lewks to date.

Irene Kim in Tibi

Major brands such a Calvin Klein, Tibi, and Balenciaga are making beautiful and interesting options but I am absolutely certain that your local thrift store has a wonderful collection in both womenswear and menswear, the latter of which a tailor can make magic with. Easy, peasy, and stylish.

White Boots Are Still On Trend

A lot of our favorite Fashion Editors and Style Influencers have been wearing white boots this past year and it doesn't seem like this trend is slowing down anytime soon. I first noticed it earlier this year at the Fall-Winter Fashion Shows and prayed they'd quietly disappear but.. here we are in September and, nevertheless, they persist.

While I don't quite understand it, I can admittedly appreciate the cleanliness that they bring to a look. They create a very strong and bold pop, which most people crave when it comes to accessorizing.

If I were ever to try the trend, I'd definitely opt for a more ruddy white boot (like the Marc Jacobs Women's Ryder Lace-Up Leather Booties Lily Alderidge wears above) as opposed to the more pristine white look which seems to be more preferred. Or maybe a patent gray, like the Christian Dior Grey Patent Calfskin booties Shiona Turini wears so effortlessly below.

But don't sleep on Shiona; she slays the white boot as well!

While I can't suggest which way to go with this trend, I can suggest you take it to God, the Creator, the Universe, R'hllor, the Lord of Light, the Old Gods, the Seven, or whatever higher power you believe in - in earnest prayer. Let he, she, or them guide you.

A Velvet Crush

L to R: Givenchy, Victoria Beckham, Daya by Zendaya, Rick Owen

A major force during the fall and winter months, velvet is still a force to be reckoned with given that the 90s revival is still in a major bloom. With plaid, grunge, chokers, and platforms making waves on the runway and in the streets, velvet will stick to them them and be a big ticket item this spring and summer. Whether it’s a jumpsuit, wide-legged tailored pants, maxi dress, midi skirt, or booties, make sure they’re made of velvet to add a splash of opulence to your wardrobe. Feel free to pair your velvet pieces with denim, satin, pleated, leather, feather, or fur pieces for a more dynamic and statement-making look!

Gucci FW2016

Alessandro Michele’s collection for Gucci  kicked off the Fall/Winter 2016 shows of Milan Fashion Week. And, listen, they did not disappoint. I want everything Alessandro put his hands on.

I love the colors and the vintage silhouettes; the cinched waists and flowy midi dresses. I'm gonna embody this Gucci Girl look this fall; just you watch.

You can view the rest of the collection here.

Fall Inspiration Straight from the Streets of Fashion Week

Shiona Turini is one of the few brown faces working in fashion and everything she does is spectacular. I'm obsessed with wide leg trousers because I'm convinced they're one of the universally flattering pieces that EVERY woman should own. It's instantaneous way to make any item chic. I love how she paired in with a crop and a blazer. This season, I'm going to see just how much I can get away with incorporating cropped pieces into the color months. I'm guessing a good coat is key, as soon as you get past all the judgmental glares.

I'm still a sucker for a monochrome look and no one seems to do it better than Christine Cetenera (before you bring up Kim Kardashian's more recent foreray into minimalism and monochromatic looks, understand that Christine - friend to Kanye and frequent DONDA collaborator - introduced her to the idea and helped her orchestrate her look). I love this mix of olive, military, and true green in her outfit and how her nude booties accentuate the look perfectly. While I've been known to be the girl who loves mixing and matching vibrant colors in my adult years, I've slowly began to be more intrigued by the neutrals that I adored (and stubbornly only wore) in my childhood and teenage years. Maybe I'll add a splash of green in during the color months. Thanks, Chrissy C!

Mixed prints was all the range 2-3 years ago but the trend has slowly (and gratefully) died down a bit; it was becoming a too overwhelming. The nostalgia brought about by this mixed print reminds me of the good times before ankara prints were introduced to the mainstream and everyone went crazy with the idea mixing prints. I love the how classic navy and white scheme is perfectly executed in stars, stripes, and spots. Not sure if it is something I would do but I'm definitely loving the look.

I tear up a bit every time I see these Dior FW15 patent calfskin boots (and its sister, the Dior calfskin booties). Why are they so good? I've never been a fan of patent but something about the look paired with the clear block heel is absolutely scrumptious. Raf Simons realy put his foot in this one. And they way this young lady has styled them is absolutely spectacular. This is something that goes perfectly with my current wardrobe. Now, if only I could fit my legs into some vinyl thigh high boots...

This dress is absolutely perfect. I love the length - that gray area that straddles between midi and maxi - and the flowy fabric and the front split. Bodycon pieces have been all the rage for several years now and I love how well it accentuates the shape but... a cozy, flowy number will always have the key to my heart. Because, truly, my comfort is a little bit more important than your ability to enjoy a nice view of my derriere. Nausheen Shah's fold-over clutch by Clare V is perfect and the strappy sandals by Sergio Rossi are the perfect accent. I haven't been brave enough to wear white fabric in years but this look definitely makes me want to try. Maybe I'll wear more whites this fall and winter and put everyone in a tizzy. (^_^)

I really enjoy how chic flats have become over the past years. I mean, I still don't own that many pairs but I love that cuter options are available now. Seeing all the street style stars wearing their's have definitely provided me with a lot of outfit inspiration. BUT.. flats aren't the reason we are here today. Today, we are here to lust at Giovanna Battaglia's divine back-tie Céline sweaterdress. Let's all just take a moment. "Cozy and Sensual" is an aesthetic I will always admire.

Just look at this Mary Katrantzou coat and let all your worries, fears, and sadness fade away. This is example of why everyone needs expertly tailored black pieces and ankle strap platform sandals because you have to be ever-ready when a beautifully crafted coat like this comes into existence. Vests and the ability to layer pieces is one of my favorite things about the fall and winter seasons. Its a great time to experiment with shapes and textures and I think this look is a great reminder to always have a little bit of fun during these seasons.

This is my quintessential fall look. Leather, flannel, and denim. I just love this picture because I feel like it could have easily been me: purse-free with my iPhone in hand.
I'm never going out of style.
